Do You Need a Business Owner's Policy (BOP)?
What a BOP actually bundles together, and how to tell if it's enough or if you need more.
A Business Owner's Policy, usually called a BOP, bundles two of the most common coverages a small business needs — general liability and commercial property insurance — into a single policy, typically at a lower combined cost than buying each separately.
The general liability piece covers the common third-party claims already familiar from standalone liability coverage — a customer injury, damage to someone else's property. The property piece covers the business's own physical assets: the building if you own it, equipment, inventory, and furniture, against risks like fire, theft, and certain kinds of weather damage.
A BOP is a genuinely good fit for a huge number of small businesses with a physical location and modest, straightforward risk — retail stores, small offices, many service businesses — precisely because it covers the two things almost every physical business needs anyway, bundled at a better price than piecing them together.
It's not automatically enough on its own, though. A BOP typically doesn't include workers' compensation (a separate, often legally required policy), professional liability for businesses giving advice or performing specialized services, or commercial auto coverage for business vehicles — all of which need to be added separately if they apply to your business.
Certain business types don't fit the standard BOP mold well at all — higher-risk industries, businesses with significant professional liability exposure, or larger operations with more complex needs — and often need a more customized combination of policies instead of the standardized bundle a BOP offers.
The practical way to figure out if a BOP is enough is to lay out, honestly, everything the business is actually exposed to — the building, the equipment, the team, the specific services provided — and have a broker map that against what a BOP does and doesn't cover, rather than assuming the bundle automatically covers everything just because it sounds comprehensive.
